OTHER INFORMATION: rhian was born to aristocrats: a duke and duchess of este, to be precise. she lived a privileged life but was always taught that treating all others as equals was extremely important. the caldwaladers went out of their way to provide as best they could for the citizens of este and were well liked by many people. or at least, they were well liked by many of the citizens - the nobility, on the other hand, began to tire of their ceaseless actions to help the people.
so, one night when she was fifteen, rhian's parents were forcibly removed from their home. the public was told by the king that the cadwaladers had secretly been stealing money from him; only by using this extra money were they able to fund their campaign to help the needy. though many did not believe the claim, the cadwaladers were sentenced to execution for treason and stealing from the kingdom. the joint execution was made public in order to prove a point.
for fear of the same thing happening to rhian, one of the family's close friends tried to take her to safety. before they could make it out of the city of estonia, though, they were stopped by a guardsman. rhian and her escort tried to flee, but in a panic the guard killed the cadwalader family friend. the man then dropped his sword and quickly called for help. when more guards arrived, he attempted to pin the older woman's murder on rhian by saying the girl was trying to avoid her family's fate and killed the woman in her escape.
before any of them could try to catch her, rhian snatched the sword from off the ground and attacked the nearest guard. while she'd never received any training in swordsmanship, she managed to strike a lucky hit and slash him across a major artery. the two other guards rushed to the aid of the man gushing blood onto the street and rhian took advantage of the momentary distraction and ran.
instead of fleeing the city, however, she took refuge in the slums of the city for several months. there were plenty of people that wanted to help her, and she eventually built up a web of connections in estonia that desired the end of the current monarchy. some followed her when she left the kingdom, while others stayed behind to act as inside informants for her slowly growing group of rebels. rhian and her few initial followers traveled all over the kingdom of este in search of more recruits.
eventually they also wandered outside of este and found sympathizers in the other kingdoms as well. rhian - now known only as cadwalader - picked up not only followers but also some valuable skills. she kept the sabre she'd taken from the guard for a while before stealing a katana (it was much more dignified than the sword and was practically begging for her to take ownership of it, so she had no choice in the matter, really). after years of training she mastered the art of sword fighting and also gathered up a fair amount of loyal followers.
she continues to expand upon her following and help others in need, as the black crows aren't not quite ready to fight back as much as she'd like yet; starting a proper, full-fledged usurping is something that takes time, obviously. in her spare time she works as a sellsword to make more money for her group. a girl has to have a hobby, right?
tldr: she's like a more vindictive version of batman, if that's even possible.
